Is Lockout/Tagout required by OSHA?

Lockout/Tagout is mandated by OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.147, also known as the Control of Hazardous Energy standard.
This regulation requires employers to implement an energy control program consisting of three core components: written energy control procedures for each machine or piece of equipment, employee training on those procedures, and periodic inspections to verify that procedures are followed correctly. Non-compliance with OSHA’s LOTO standard consistently ranks among the agency’s Top 10 most frequently cited violations, with 2,443 violations recorded in fiscal year 2024.
